At the Genbukan Karate club we offer a ‘no nonsense’ approach to Karate developing strength and focus through conditioning drills. Students and guests will be instructed in the traditional Okinawan Goju style of Karate with a modern twist suitable for all fitness and experience levels.
Goju-Ryu, meaning ‘Hard & Soft’ style, is an early form of karate heavily influenced by the southern Chinese kung fu styles throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It is typically a close-range fighting style, emphasising control over the opponent through grappling techniques coupled with powerful short strikes. This combination of grappling and striking makes for a versatile martial art ideal for self-defence.
Training at the club involves high-intensity physical conditioning with traditional and modern combat techniques. The curriculum therefore contains a mixture of solo practice of basics, “kata” (traditional forms), partnered drills, sparring, pad work and grappling.
Whether you are looking to gain self-defense skills, get fit, or compliment your current martial arts repertoire, we invite you to join the Genbukan Karate family.
Goju-Ryu is an ideal self-defence discipline focusing on close distance combat. Techniques include stomp kicks, elbow strikes and takedowns.
